Drones to reforest scorched forests in forest fires

One company has distributed 100,000 smart pine and oak seeds in Guadalajara using a drone

Drones not only serve to watch from the air or take spectacular images tens of meters high. A company from Navarra, «CO2 Revolution», has developed a pioneering project reforesting for three days with a drone 1,200 hectares of the Alto Tajo Natural Park, in Guadalajara, which were burned in a serious forest fire occurred in 2012.

Specifically, the drone-endowed with a deposit-has launched 100,000 smart seeds. Previously, the people in charge of this project mapped the terrain to analyze in which points it would be advisable the distribution of these seeds that “are capable of germinating are launched where they are launched with an 80 percent probability of success”, explains Juan Carlos Sesma, founder of this business.

On the Alto Tajo have been scattered seeds of wild pine, pine and oak Nigra from the nursery that the Ministry of Environment has in El Serranillo (Guadalajara), seeds “smart” introduced in biodegradable capsules with rooting to which add repellents against possible predators that could ruin the reforestation, polymers that absorb water, organic fertilizer and natural herbicides.

Fast and cheap

According to those responsible for this project, which has had the approval of the Junta de Castilla-La Mancha, this technique can revolutionize the methods that until now have been used in Spain to recover forests burned in fires. “Deforestation is a very serious problem on the planet and to avoid that life on Earth changes drastically, a large-scale change is necessary in order to recover enormous quantities of carbon in the gaseous state from the atmosphere and turn them into solid state.

mitigating climate change “, says Juan Carlos Sesma, for whom the use of drones is much cheaper and faster than the traditional repopulation system since” in just five hours you can reforest an area of 100,000 trees. “

After having launched these 100,000 seeds on the AltoTajo guadalajareño a second phase of follow-up begins: every two weeks, responsible for this company will move to the area to check the results. According to the calculations of Juan Carlos Sesma, “at the end of the spring of 2019 a good part of these seeds will have created a forest in formation with plants up to half a meter in height”.
